Perinatologist and etc...

Big appointment today! (If you are lost read the previous post) Better? I had an appointment today to figure out if there were any other "soft makers" as a result of the Single Umbilical Artery. Well ladies and gentlemen THERE IS NOTHING WRONG! Baby G is, to quote the Doctor, "Picture Perfect." The weight and height is perfect, the anatomy is all as it should be and my fluids are right on track. So good news!!! The perinatologist said he will recommend for my OB to do one last ultrasound between 32-34 weeks just to make sure Baby G is growing properly. A low birth weight will be out last hurdle, but like I said before I do NOT see that happening. Most of you have met Zak right? So glad that appointment is over and done, its all down hill from here...wait I don't think thats right!!

I always open my big mouth...

Of course as soon as I open my big mouth, or post it on the blog rather, my "Normal" pregnancy takes another turn! Nothing to horrible, as of yet that is but still another unknown. I had to go back for a second ultrasound last week because the baby wasn't cooperating by laying the wrong way which meant they couldn't get a clear picture of the spine. Baby G decided to listen for this second ultrasound and was postioned perfect for the spine pictures and cord insertion as well. Upon looking at the umbilical cord the tech notice the cord only has 3 vessels when it should have 3, 2 arteries and 1 vein. Now while usually this means just a low birth weight it can increase the baby's risk for certain birth deffects including chromosomal and/or other abnormalities. These can include trisomy 13 or trisomy 18. However, the most common pregnancy complications that occur in infants with SUA are heart defects, gastrointestinal tract abnormalities and problems with the central nervous system. The respiratory system, urinary tract, and musculoskeletal system may also be affected. One in five babies affected by SUA will be born with multiple malformations. This being said it is also a very common malformation happening in 1 in 100 pregnancies. My doctor has been deliverying babies for 9 years and said she has delivered a few babies where they didn't know the cord only had two vessels until it delivered! That being said she is sending me to a specialist on the 26th who will preform a Level 2 ultrasound and look for any problems with the major organs. We already know there are 2 kidneys and a 4 chambered heart (good signs!) as the tech at the last ultrasound commented on both. Also, there is no cleft pallet. So knowing that as of now there is on the one "soft marker" for other birth defects I believe we are in a good situation. I am going to just go all out and say that everything is going to be perfect with Baby G's ultrasounds!! If, when everything checks out they will just keep an extra eye on the baby's growth to make sure the height and weight matches the due date. I have a specious feeling this wont be much of a problem, can you say 10lb baby anyone? As of now Baby G is measuring about a week ahead of the due date so this is GREAT news!!! My visit with the Perinatologist is scheduled for May 26th so we shall keep ya posted on that!!!
